Essential Dispensing Skills for Pharmacy Professionals

September 29, 2026

Community pharmacies rely on accurate processes, effective teamwork and staff who can work comfortably across different dispensary environments. Building solid dispensing skills is one of the things that keeps a pharmacy running well and gives professionals the confidence to move between sites.

Understand the complete dispensing workflow

Training is more useful when it connects individual tasks to the wider flow of work: taking in prescriptions, creating or checking records, handling queries, managing stock and escalating things to the pharmacist when needed. Responsibilities differ by role, and no course authorises someone to carry out regulated duties outside their professional scope.

Develop systems familiarity

Being comfortable with TouchStore/RX365, MPS/McLernons or DisPenSense is helpful when you're moving between pharmacies. Knowing how to navigate a system, follow local standard operating procedures and recognise when to ask for help matters more than memorising every screen. TouchStore/RX365 is treated as one system for ILHG's programme selections.

Practise the situations that come up at work

Structured scenarios can cover prescription processing, stock-related tasks, documentation, HSE/PCRS workflows, controlled-drug processes and customer-service situations, depending on the participant's role and the course being delivered. Professional judgement and the pharmacist's legal responsibilities always sit at the centre of the work.

How ILHG can help

ILHG runs practical pharmacy dispensing programmes, from a Single System Intensive through to extended multi-system training, with an after-training refresher available. Courses are built to support workplace readiness and further learning; they don't replace professional registration or supervised practice.
